Violence at Howe Community Park Sends 4 Shot in Arden-Arcade Sacramento

Sacramento authorities are examining a shooting incident that broke out late Saturday at Howe Community Park as Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dissolving a large unauthorized gathering of an estimated several hundred individuals.

Background

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first called to the park just after 6:30 PM on April 18 after obtaining information of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Following that, another report was received mentioning a possible physical fight taking place within the park grounds.

A sheriff's airship searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Regardless, it was evident that hundreds of people had packed into the park without authorization.

When the Shots Rang Out

Responding units moved to clear the area by setting up around the park's perimeter and announcing over their public address systems telling the hundreds present to vacate the area. Roughly 15 minutes were allotted for people to comply.

As the crowd was being cleared that an estimated 20 to 25 shots were fired. The rapid succession of shots sent hundreds fleeing. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies swiftly started searching for victims.

Those Who Were Hit

Altogether, four gunshot victims were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — a group of one female and three male victims each apparently in their twenties — were rushed to area medical facilities. Medical personnel stated that two victims were in serious condition, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. In a positive development, all four were expected to survive.

Evidence at the Scene

The primary shooting scene was confirmed to have taken place on the Cottage Way corridor next to the local Home Depot located at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. CSI personnel recovered additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Ballistic damage were discovered in the wrought iron fence surrounding the Home Depot. These findings confirmed that a shooter had been firing southward from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. That Home Depot location was temporarily locked down for a period of time. CSI investigators and detectives remained on scene throughout the night.

Suspect Vehicle Located

Intelligence received through law enforcement radio communications showed that a Kia connected to the shooting was pulled over in Solano County California. Four occupants were stopped and detained. Sheriff's units were traveling to Solano County to collect the individuals for processing in Sacramento County. Surveillance footage established that two shooters had been involved.
